The Vocaloid family finally gets another member. Megurine Luka (巡音ルカ) is released today. And dozens of songs of her are already uploaded on Nico Nico Douga and YouTube. Even a Ranking of her songs is already uploaded at Nico Nico Douga. Luka was originally planned to be released last month at December, but she was delayed until today due to “difficulties in making the voice library”. Well, I won’t blame Crypton since Luka is bilingual, she speaks and sings both English and Japanese. Happy 20th Birthday Luka! I must say, her voice is pretty good, although it kind of sounds similar to Meiko’s voice. She sings well in English, too! As she’s much older than other vocaloids, she’s probably going to have a big sister/motherly image attached to her, somewhat like Meiko. Read on for more details.

As mentioned before, she’s voiced by Asakawa Yuu, famous for voicing Rider in Fate/Stay Night and Sakaki in Azumanga Daioh. She have a “cool and husky” voice, is 20 years old, is 162cm tall and 45 kg in weight. Her favorite genre of music are Latin Jazz Pop and House Dance Electronica. She can sing from the note D3 to D5, and in 65 to 145 BPM.

Many songs of her have been uploaded to Nico Nico Douga, and I mean many. There’s even a Final Fantasy 11 Soundtrack by Luka (she does look like a RPG character). To see most of the best songs by Luka available now, see the Megurine Luka Ranking at Nico Nico Douga, and I’ll mirror it to YouTube soon. I can name “Migrating Birds” or “Utopia Stardust” as one of the best songs by her for now. By the way, Utopia Stardust earned 130,000 points in 12 hours, so I bet it’s going to be number one in the next Weekly Vocaloid Ranking.

The Luka hype is not only on Nico Nico Douga or YouTube. Image sites like Piapro, Pixiv or Danbooru are already filled with her fanarts, and many of them are really good, such as this one here.

オリイ and other Vocaloid song producers such as konekoP managed to get the software before it’s even released. オリイ posted the unboxing on his blog. I’m planning to get her software as soon as possible and I’ll try to find out how the voice changes between English and Japanese.

Thanks for reading! For more discussions on Luka, feel free to post on our forum. Please contribute to our Vocaloid Wiki too!

  1. I just watched a couple of Luka videos on Nico just now. My favorite one so far is a Talkloid between her, Len, and Miku. It’s actually one of the best Talkloids I’ve ever heard. Here is it if you want to give it a listen—>http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm5994039

In the meantime, I’ll give those first 2 songs a listen. The art in the preview looks gorgeous.

  2. luka is the best vocaloid ever and I hope she surpasses miku because she truly deserves it. everyone likes miku because of her design. But miku is really nothing special, so why not give luka a try? she is definitely the best!
