Well, it may be a bit late posting this after the Anime Festival Asia (AFA) event ended on last Sunday. But that’s because we are busy preparing the cosplay photos ready to be included in this post. And just to refresh everyone’s mind on what AFA is, it is an animation convention event held in Singapore celebrating all things related to Japanese animation and popular culture.

This year’s AFA has been a fine one as we get to witness even more Vocaloid-related cosplays as Hatsune Miku officially appeared for the first time in Singapore for her first performance outside of Japan. So just continue reading after the break for more cosplay and event descriptions~

Also, we would like to thank forum member Frozen Fairy for kindly providing the photos which he has took for the first day of AFA, thanks so much Fairy-san! ^_^

First off, here’s some photos of Vocaloid-related cosplays from Day 1 of AFA below.

And now we move on to Miku’s performance during the “I Love Anisong” concert, it’s somewhat similar to her performance at Animelo Summer Live 2009. Basically Miku appeared in the same way as she transformed in the opening of Project DIVA, then she started with greeting Singapore before going on to sing Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru, Koisuru Voc@loid and World Is Mine. The graphics and dance moves were actually the same (taken) from the PSP game, though there was fireworks at the end of one of the songs. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention but it was actually lagging during the songs. Then it ended with Miku signing off with a “I ♥ Singapore. Miku” (Miku word in green) message, the whole thing took about 15-20 minutes. Many of us were actually hoping Miku’s part of the concert would be longer (The concert is 2 hours, after all), but sadly, it wasn’t meant to be.

And here’s more Vocaloid cosplay pictures below, taken from Day 2 of AFA 09. Enjoy!

  1. Ahahahahaha! Some of these are good, but why am I getting the feeling that most of them looks like Indonesians’ worker. lol

    No offense there.

  2. I wouldn't call them good. I see them as average only. There are better cosplays out there. Day 1 concert was disappointing. The Hatsune Miku performance was a rip from Project Diva, and it LAGGED!! It freaking lagged. At the last part they spewed out some pyro from the stage, which imo is just to censor the horrible lag especially towards the end of it. Day 2 Concert was epic though. On a completely different scale. Fukuyama was really good at building up the mood, followed by May'n which made it even better. Best of all, they sang 2 encore pieces with 1 being a collaboration between Fukuyama and May'n.

AFA on the whole was pretty interesting. Although I missed buying the K-ON! Yui Plushie (the big one). Kaname's talk was really interesting and useful. K-ON! Experience was another superb event. Too bad Mio's seiyuu wasn't there. But oh well, Toyosaki Aki is super cute!!

On the whole, the only negative feedback I have regarding AFA09, is the horrible translations. During the Kaname's cosplay session, there was this male translator and the emcee. The male translator failed to pronounce the word "shitsuji" properly, and he even translated it to "servant", which doesn't make sense in the context, because they were talking about Kaname's Butler Cafe (Shitsuji Kissa – or something along the lines). Nonetheless, it should have been translated as "Butler" instead of "servant", because attire-wise and setting-wise, a butler is completely different from a servant.

During the K-ON! Experience, there were also many parts left out by the translators/emcees. I understand that it is difficult to translate on the spot sometimes, especially if the seiyuu sometimes speak for too long. But still, things that were said by the seiyuu which were quite important were left out. I'm not good at picking up Japanese yet, but I can definitely hear something regarding the K-ON! seiyuu coming down again, this time with all 5 of them (since Mio's wasn't around).

    1. Really? Can you enlighten me on the other event which Miku has made another live appearance on?

But yeah, it was actually lagging during Miku's performance, the AFA staff could have done this on a much better machine I guess. =/

      1. mikufes 09, her birthday concert… it was 2 hours long, 3 projection screens… many of the composers there, live band, epic.

the youtube versions don't have very good sound quality, but supposedly there's a dvd coming.
