Vocaloid NND Weekly Ranking
Weekly Vocaloid Ranking “Unselected”

This week I decided to change the style of the vocaran a bit to make it easier to see the rank. Let me know what you think about this change in the comments.

Naho’s Opening Statement:

Good morning, it’s time for this week’s VocaRan!

It seems that, this year, the flu is targeting people who are in their twenties and thirties, which is about the age of our listeners… Make sure to gargle* and wash your hands!

*Gargling is practiced in Japan for perceived prevention of viral infection.

This week’s top 3 songs are getting a lot of attention. Maybe, a bit like the flu, they spread among the population, or that people were really waiting to hear the work of the SCL Project, or simply that they’re new songs, but in any case, they’re really addictive!

It’ll soon be February, which means it will be time for mamemaki and to eat the ehomakis. And don’t forget to offer the obligatory-gift chocolates for Valentine’s Day!

This week too we’ll start from number 30!

Notes:

-Editors: Pengy, DTKel, Holocauxt, deztora, descent87, bunnychan, Krystal
-Translator: kurisuto
-Song Status: Up (↑), Down (↓), Unmoved (→), Unranked (–), New (!!)

In Other Vocaloid News:

That was this week’s number 1!

A lot of new features, including the long awaited Duet Mode and Contest Mode! And of course, there are a lot of new songs!
“Hatsune Miku Project DIVA Arcade Version A” will be sequentially coming to all the video arcades in Japan starting from January, 27th.

Incidentally, we now can hear Vocaloid songs even in convenience stores! Maybe 2011 will be the year of Vocaloid!

Well then, let’s see the rest of this ranking, from number 31.

Editor Picks of the week:

Final Thoughts/Analysis:

Hmm some kind of project diva announcement, waiting on kurisuto’s translation on that!

…And so with that, we end this week’s Vocaloid Ranking review. Please join us again next week, and I hate leaf cats.

  1. Panda Hero feels like a less punchy Matryoshka to me.
    I want to like it but… 🙁
Hm… I can not care for a Hachi song once in awhile. He works hard.
I look forward to many other great songs from him this year!

    But Babel is back! 😀
    And VanaN’Ice!

  2. #11, I see… Black rock shooter… Melt… Double lariat or 方向音痴.. Ohhhhhh, I think I know the last one too…

Haha~ I remember when that ranking was out~

Hm, Is it just me… or do all trio songs from VanaN’Ice come at 3rd place…? Oh well~
Hm, why have Nyanyan been bumped so mcuh lately..? Prehaps I'm just slow…
    Pa-pa-paa~ Pa-pa-pa-pa-paaa~
Somehow that makes me think of another panda song…

  3. I like the new layout of the ranking, maybe a space between the song ranking and it's status will be even better.

Also, what is the SCL Project ?

No time to hear the Vocaran now, but bravo to Daniwell still having two songs on the chart. And for those not addicted enough to his works allow me to introduce you the NekoMatagi remix:

    [youtube Esl_h7RcrKA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Esl_h7RcrKA youtube]

  4. How that Nyanyan song beat VanaN'Ice, I will never know… Sure its catchy, but it's just meaninglessly saying the same word over and over again. That's not a real song in my opinion.

    1. ニャニャニャニャニャニャニャ 😛

Actually Miku is not even singing at all in this PV ! Although she's Daniwell's favorite Vocaloid, I think it's incredible to reach such a level of fame to be credited in a song were you're not actually singing. But if you really want to hear Miku singing the Nya, check Electric Parade (#30) from the same P, there's plenty of them in ^^.

      Also:

      1. If she's not singing, then it shouldn't even be in the Vocaran in the first place… And its not a song, it's fast cat noises.

      2. Wait, do you mean she's not singing #2 on the ranking? I'm preeetty sure I misunderstood you, but if I didn't, I'm almost positive that's not true.

        1. Are we watching the same PV ? I'm positive she's not singing nor any vocaloid is singing unless you count displaying "Nya" in a PV as "singing" 😀 ).

          1. Miku is indeed singing in that song. Daniwell tunes her in a different way than normal, so she might be difficult to distinguish from the background unless you know what you're trying to hear, if that makes sense. Compare it with #30, which is also by daniwell.

          2. If the main music theme is made with Miku's voice, there's no point saying it's her singing, since obviously the voice is so distorted that any synthesizer could have produced the same kind of sound. In Electric Parade, Miku may be very tuned, but you still can hear a voice actually saying Nya. That's not the case here.

          3. Daniwell tunes Miku in the same way (or at least similar enough to be recognizable) in all of his songs. The only issue here is that the background music overpowers Miku a bit too much in Nyanyanya(ry. Otherwise, both that and Electric Parade are fundamentally the same.

          4. You must be jocking right ? I have all of Daniwell's song and hear perfectly well the voice of Miku (except Neko mimi switch with Rin&Len of course ^^).

But in this one I can't hear her voice at all oO. Now I'm ready to accept that the sounds produced are done with her voice, but I can't believe anyone would recognice a Vocaloid voicebank …

          5. Once again, you have to be actively listening to distinguish Miku's voice from the background music. It's higher and more blended into the background than usual, which makes it harder to hear for some. She's singing the repeated "nya" that makes up the main tune of the song.

  5. Nya(x7) became the new Nico meme last week, which is why it's #2. It would have been #1, but Panda Hero beat it at the last minute. I tried explaining that on the last ranking post, but apparently I was still in incomprehensible mode when I wrote that comment.

  6. I also like the new layout.

When I try to watch the ED song (Clover), NND pops up one of those messages I can't translate and doesn't let me watch the video. What is that?

    1. Dunno, usually its either that Nico is under load, and non-premium users get kicked out, or you have too many videos loading at once, or you re-loaded the video too quicky and have to try again later, but since I get the error too, must be that its under load.

      1. Thanks. At least now I have some idea what those messages mean. I followed the link on the NND page to Piapro so I could at least hear Clover. Good song.

        Thanks again.

      1. It depends on your connection, really. Nicovideo has the advantage of higher quality and having songs first, but if you have a slow connection, it's best to use YouTube.

  7. Humm, not too much in Panda Hero (#1), but anyway this Vocaran still bring a lot of good new songs although the previous week was amazing. I have a real fondness for Kaeri michi (#20 かえりみち – BTW is that 帰り道 ?) where Miku sing with a clear and natural voice not too covered by instrumentals or effects. It shows a good mastering of the voicebank by Fuwari-P

  8. Man just now getting through 3 weeks of Vocaran's, some really good new stuff. Props Pengy on finding the awesome What's Up related artwork on pivix, thats beyond cute. "I love you, I need you", wow totally in to that.

  9. Probably gonna feature どういうことなの!? along with Chaining Intention as examples of MMD/PV fusion works when I do my panel at Ohaycon this weekend. I really would like someone to hard sub it first though.

      1. Lol I'm in the same boat as you Pengy (although I might not have the time this week). I can hard sub but I don't know the Japanese well enough to do it in less than a whole day's worth of effort. I will keep a sharp eye out for any subs before Friday and might ask you assistance if a miracle happens on that front. I like the new format, putting in as many song title translations/transliterations as you can is actually a very good development.

  10. It's more than just vibes; I can hear strings of notes straight from Matryoshka more than a few times. It's really disappointing. This week in general was disappointing, actually; tons of repeats. I got ストロボラスト out of it, though!

  11. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like Hachi : / He is incredibly popular though. He uploaded Panda Hero only 12 hours before the ranking, presumably to give other videos a chance, but alas it didn't work. (not saying I don't like Hachi because he's so popular, I just don't like his disorganized style) The Vocaran blog informed me that he actually beat the record for getting a number one song in just before the ranking: http://www.geocities.jp/vocaran_link/ (in the つぶやき section)

My favorite song this week is Sukikirai~ I like Lovelessxxx too.

    1. Hey dude there isn't really that much bitterness. Like 2 people (yes me) out of like 1 million said they didn't really like his stuff. For me its just like when you go to an art museum or something, you could careless about most of the art but at the same time you recognize the massive amount of talent it took to make it. Thats all I'm really saying.

And no, I won't fanboy over wowaka either. I like his big hits but nothing else really appeals to me. Well, except for Out of Step, which I like even more than his big hits.

TodayIsOK, lol at you link, but srsly if wowaka remixed that with Miku or Gumi singing it at a faster tempo it would be win.

      1. Maybe I'm biased because in the other popular English vocaloid community there is a lot of love towards wowaka, and at most the only thing they criticize is how he use Miku voice. I have to admit that I've rarely read either positive or negative comments about wowaka on here.

        1. The thing is, I try to keep negative comments to a minimum when making my own, if I wanted to I could add negative comments, but I want everyone to listen to the songs and not have my judgment prevent them from liking it.

        2. Similar to what Pengy said, and I have/will try to do the same thing. I always get uncomfortable when people express really strong opinions on alot of Vocaloid stuff (even when I do it I almost always wind up regretting it). Usually for two reasons.

          1. We're not exactly the largest community, no one should be driven out of any of the major non-Japan Vocaloid communities of Vocaloid voice or producer flamewars.

          2. So many songs that I once didn't like have become some of my favorites over time while others that I once listened to every day have now fallen by the way side. Big example, "Scene" by JimmyThumbP. I dunno why but 6-7 months ago I almost deleted that from my computer when I first listened to it. But for some reason of the past month or so I fell so in love with it I would up Uttae Mittae'ing it in the end.

Also, there is no rebuke of you in any of this. I just randomly sharing my feelings… *sniffle*

    2. First of all, I see wowaka criticized a lot. Second of all, I don't mind if musicians use the same formula for every song, it's just that Hachi's style doesn't tickle my fancy, that's all.

      1. Formula is common in professional music, too. A lot of the Beatles’ early music sounded similar. Rod Stewart became famous off of two similar songs from the same record. Lady Gaga’s discography is nearly indistinguishable from itself.

For better or worse, it happens.

    3. The only time I can recall wowaka totally copying one of his own songs a la Panda Hero was with Out of Step, which was very suspiciously Uraomote Lovers. Yeah, he rolls with the same style for the most part, but it's not the same notes or anything. It's like saying some rock band is totally copying themselves because they use a guitar, drums, bass, and the same singer for each song.

      1. Rolling Girl isn't a copy of Tsumiki no Ningyou (積み木の人形) now? And even World's End Dancehall has its similiraties to Uraomote Lovers (not much like the previous mentioned though).

  12. Is this the first GUMI solo debut at #1? If I remember correctly, the closest one after that was when DECO got cheated out of first place with Montblanc. If not, please refresh my memory.

    1. Mozaik Role got rank one twice.

I Want to See You also got rank one.

Those are the only two at the top of my head I can think of, though…

    2. This is the fourth Gumi solo song to take the first position in the weekly vocaran. The first was Mozaik Role (duh), then Aitai and then Poker Face.
